For collectors of Rolex there are some iconic models and then there are some lesser known models with a true cult following. Often times these examples break the mold, are esoteric and for periods are slept and paid little attention. It is often the case that the boldest and most unexpected models of an era over time gain incredible appreciation and become true grails for many. Enter a unique and trying time in the 1970s; The Quartz Crisis. The high end luxury watch market was hit with a market and force unlike anything seen before. The advent of inexpensive quartz watches was a huge blow and nearly decimated a once robust and vibrant watch market for automatic and mechanical watches. Many brands struggled with which path to take; quartz watches were explored and introduced almost across the board. Rolex was no exception. However, they were not quite sold on the quartz ideas but also wanted to incorporate a design and style that was quite popular during the time. As a result, the incorporated automatic movement into the case of the OysterQuartz model. The Rolex 1530 and 1630 was born. The 1530 took the classic stainless steel design and the 1630 took a stainless and gold design with a modified and reimagined jubilee bracelet. The 1530 was a date and the 1630 was a Datejust. With a very limited run of these watches produced; estimates less than 300 pieces for the 1530, it is very difficult to find all original and well maintained examples.
We are pleased to offer this mid 1970s examples which is in outstanding overall condition especially for the model. The case is in outstanding shape showing wear and marks throughout but maintains original proportions, bevels and lugs. The dial is excellent and has a creamy silver color. The inner bezel is stunning and maintains all luminous plots.
